The OMI research core currently consists of 13 researchers dedicated to generating valuable information to support the formulation, management, and implementation of public policies aimed at preventing and addressing major health and nutrition issues during the preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, and pediatric stages.
Dr. Mónica Ancira Moreno

Dr. Mónica Ancira Moreno is a full-time faculty member in the Department of Health at Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City. She holds a Master’s in Clinical Nutrition and a Ph.D. in Population Nutrition from the National Institute of Public Health (INSP). She is a Level 1 member of the National System of Researchers and a member of the Canadian Nutrition Society, the American Society for Nutrition, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She is certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors and the Interprofessional Leadership Development Program. Dr. Ancira was selected for the Latin American Nutrition Leadership Program (LILANUT) in 2023 and the WHO Cochrane Cornell Summer Institute in 2024.
Dr. Ancira has led various intervention, cohort, and population-scale studies focused on addressing maternal and child malnutrition and improving service quality within the Mexican health system. She currently leads the “Maternal and Child Observatory” project, whose evaluation and monitoring system of indicators provides insight into the nutritional and health status during the preconception, pregnancy, lactation, and pediatric stages in Mexico.

Mtra. Soraya Burrola holds a Master’s in Applied Nutrition from Universidad Iberoamericana. She is currently affiliated with the Department of Health at Universidad Iberoamericana, where she oversees the Program for Strengthening Academic Quality in the Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition and Food Science.
She has collaborated on various studies conducted by the Research Institute for Development with Equity. Her research focuses on topics such as breastfeeding, chronic diseases, and inequities in nutrition and health. She has also delivered several presentations at national and international conferences.

Dr. Pablo Gaitán

Dr. Pablo Gaitán holds a Ph.D. in Social Welfare from Boston College and Universidad Iberoamericana. He has been a full-time faculty member at Universidad Iberoamericana since 2007, where he also earned his degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Sociology. He currently serves as the Director of EQUIDE and is the managing editor of the scientific journal "International Journal for Equity in Health."
He teaches in the graduate programs of Applied Nutrition, Psychological Research, and Sociology. His primary research interests include early childhood development, food insecurity, older adults, and implementation science. He is a member of the National System of Researchers (Level I).

Dra. Elizabeth Hoyos Loya

Dr. Elizabeth Hoyos Loya holds a Master’s in Public Health and a Ph.D. in Health Systems Science from the National Institute of Public Health (INSP). In 2024, she was recognized as a Candidate for the National System of Researchers in Mexico, reflecting her commitment to research. She has teaching experience at both undergraduate and graduate levels, covering subjects in population nutrition, public health, and health systems.
Dr. Hoyos Loya is the author and co-author of several publications in high-impact indexed scientific journals and has been a speaker at national and international conferences representing Mexico and Latin America. Her research focuses on the organized social response of the health system to various health issues, primarily in the areas of maternal and child nutrition, breastfeeding, obesity, and non-communicable chronic diseases from an equity and social justice perspective.

Dr. Alan Hernández Solano

Dr. Alan Hernández Solano is an applied mathematician and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Colegio de México. He is a candidate for National Researcher status. His areas of interest include poverty, inequality, climate change, and agricultural economics, with an emphasis on rural areas and small producers. His research interests encompass economic modeling, applied general and partial equilibrium models, and econometric estimations.

Dr. Mauricio Hernández Fernández

Dr. Mauricio Hernández Fernández holds a degree in Mathematics from the Center for Research in Mathematics (CIMAT, 2003), a Master’s in Economics from the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE, 2005), and a Ph.D. in Population Nutrition from the National Institute of Public Health of Mexico (INSP, 2017). Before joining academia, he gained extensive experience in various areas of economic and social development planning in public administration.
Since 2014, he has been involved in several interdisciplinary projects for the design, monitoring, and evaluation of policies in food, health, and nutrition. In 2018, he participated in the coordinating team for the development of the book “Obesity in Mexico: Status of Public Policy and Recommendations for Prevention and Control.” He is currently a faculty member at the Research Institute for Development with Equity (EQUIDE) at Universidad Iberoamericana and a Level 1 member of the National System of Researchers for the period 2023-2027. His research interests focus on structural factors related to obesity, food environments and systems, food insecurity, and social well-being.

Dra. Sonia Hernández Cordero

Dr. Sonia Hernández Cordero holds a Ph.D. in International Nutrition from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She is a Level II member of the National System of Researchers and a full-time academic and researcher at Universidad Iberoamericana. In her research area, Dr. Hernández Cordero has developed projects aimed at generating evidence that translates into public health policies related to food and nutrition.
Her primary interest lies in maternal and child nutrition, with a special emphasis on breastfeeding in the general population and vulnerable groups, such as women with overweight and obesity. She has collaborated with national and international multidisciplinary teams using the best evidence-based approaches to develop national policies that promote breastfeeding in Mexico, which are useful for decision-makers.
Another area of interest in public health nutrition has been the design and evaluation of evidence-based strategies to prevent obesity, particularly in women and children, with a life-course perspective. She has extensive experience leading significant research projects, including randomized clinical trials, case studies, and cross-sectional studies. Dr. Hernández Cordero is actively involved in the master’s and doctoral programs in nutrition at various educational institutions.

Dra. Miriam López Teros

Dr. Miriam López Teros is a physician with a Master’s in Nutrition Sciences specializing in geriatrics and a Ph.D. candidate in Health Management and Public Policies at UNAM. She currently serves as the coordinator of the Specialization in Gerontological Nutrition and the Center for Elderly Evaluation at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. She is an active member of the Thematic Network on Aging, Health, and Social Development of the National Institute of Geriatrics.
Dr. López Teros specializes in body composition, nutrition, and functionality in older adults. Among her recent research and publications are: Hyperinsulinemia is Associated with the Loss of Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass at 4.6 Year Follow-Up in Older Men and Women (2014), Gait Speed and Handgrip Strength as Predictors of Incident Disability in Mexican Older Adults (2014), Derechos Humanos en el Adulto Mayor (2016), and Risk of Malnutrition Associated with Physical Disability: Evidence from a Case-Control Study in Older Mexican Adults (2017).

L.E. Meztli Moncada holds a degree in Economics and is currently a graduate student pursuing a Master's in Public Policy. Her areas of interest include behavioral economics, poverty, development, and health economics.
She has participated in various projects at the Research Institute for Development with Equity in the areas of health and poverty. Her research has focused on breastfeeding, early childhood, aging, social mobility, and food insecurity. Meztli has collaborated with research institutions such as Yale University, Duke University, the Espinosa Yglesias Study Center (CEEY), the National Institute of Geriatrics (INGER), the National Electoral Institute (INE), and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
Dr. Eric Monterrubio Flores

Dr. Eric Monterrubio Flores holds a Ph.D. in Sciences with a concentration in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health of Mexico (2013), a Master’s in Health Sciences with a concentration in Epidemiology (2005), and a Bachelor’s degree in Administrative Computing Systems from the University of the Valley of Mexico, Tlalpan campus (1998).
He is currently affiliated with the Department of Obesity, Diabetes, and Cardiovascular Risk at the Center for Nutrition and Health Research (CINyS) of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), serving as a Medical Sciences Researcher “C.” He is recognized as a Level I Researcher in the National System of Researchers, CONACYT.
Dr. Monterrubio Flores has participated in research related to malnutrition in populations, the development of screening and measurement instruments, and has contributed to the development of over 34 published articles in high-impact national and international research journals, as well as more than 100 presentations at international and national events. He has been involved in training human resources as a lecturer in graduate programs at the School of Public Health of Mexico, Universidad Iberoamericana, and other institutions, teaching courses in quantitative methodological areas oriented towards Public Health and supervising graduate theses. His areas of interest include research methodology and the application of quantitative methods in research on malnutrition, nutrition, and its main health issues in populations.

Mtra. Karla Angélica Muciño Sandoval

Dra. Cinthya Muñoz Manrique

Dra. Cinthya Muñoz Manrique holds a degree in Nutrition and Food Science from Universidad Iberoamericana León, a Master’s in Health Sciences with a concentration in Clinical Epidemiology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and a Ph.D. in Population Nutrition from the National Institute of Public Health. She is currently a member of the National System of Researchers (SNI-I) and a Medical Sciences B researcher at the National Institute of Perinatology. Additionally, she provides private nutrition counseling to women of reproductive age at Hospital Español and ABC Observatorio in Mexico City.
Dra. Muñoz has experience in the design, implementation, and data analysis of observational studies conducted during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Her research interests focus on women's health during reproductive age. She has taught classes and supervised theses in nutrition at various universities in Mexico and has served as a lecturer and thesis director in the Master's program in Clinical Nutrition. She is an adjunct member and coordinator of the nutrition chapter of the Mexican College of Gynecology and Obstetrics (COMEGO). Since 2013, she has coordinated the perinatal clinical nutrition diploma program offered by LaSalle University and the Food Guidance Center (COA). To date, she has published 11 scientific articles in indexed international journals, two book chapters, and has delivered several presentations at national and international conferences.

Dra. Isabel Omaña Guzmán

Dra. Isabel Omaña Guzmán holds a degree in Human Nutrition from the Autonomous Metropolitan University, a Master’s in Nutrition from the National Institute of Public Health, and a Ph.D. in Biological and Health Sciences from the Autonomous Metropolitan University. Dra. Claudia Ivonne Ramírez Silva

Dr. Ivonne Ramírez is a Researcher in Sciences “D” at the Center for Research in Nutrition and Health at the National Institute of Public Health. She holds a degree in Nutrition from the Autonomous Metropolitan University, Xochimilco Unit. She completed her Master's in Health Sciences with a concentration in Nutrition and her Ph.D. in Population Nutrition at the Mexico School of Public Health, where she is currently a member of the faculty of the Master's program in Nutrition and the Chapter of Doctors in Nutrition.
Dr. Ramírez has participated in the National Health and Nutrition Surveys in Mexico and in impact evaluations conducted by the National Institute of Public Health on government programs such as “Oportunidades” and Liconsa, as well as the federal nutrition and supply policy in Mexico. She is a member of the breastfeeding committee of the State of Morelos. Currently, she leads two cohort studies in children and adolescents and works on generating a food composition database for Mexico to analyze dietary surveys.
Her research interests include maternal and child nutrition; early determinants of obesity, metabolic disorders during childhood, breastfeeding and complementary feeding, intervention design and evaluation, and the assessment and estimation of dietary intake at the population level.

Dr. Isidro Soloaga

Dr. Isidro Soloaga holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics (AREC) from the University of Maryland, USA, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the National University of La Plata, Argentina. He is recognized as a Level III Researcher in the National System of Researchers, CONACYT.
He has worked as a consultant in the Research Department of the World Bank in Washington, D.C. (Development Economics Research Group - DECRG) and has taught at the University of Buenos Aires, the University of the Americas (Puebla), and El Colegio de México. Dra. Mireya Vilar

Dr. Mireya Vilar is an associate professor in the Department of Public Health at Montclair State University. She holds a Ph.D. in Health Policy from New York University (NYU), Wagner School, USA, and a Master’s degree in Development Policy from the University of York, UK.
Her work focuses on health inequities and early determinants of health, translating these research findings into feasible, evidence-based interventions. She has conducted research in areas such as breastfeeding, food insecurity, and nurturing care environments, among others.
Her research has been funded by both national (e.g., CONACYT) and international organizations (e.g., NIH). She has also collaborated with civil society organizations (e.g., Pacto por la Primera Infancia) and international agencies (e.g., UNICEF, World Bank). Dr. Vilar-Compte has published extensively in leading international journals in her areas of interest, authoring over 30 manuscripts in scientific journals and book chapters. She has contributed to technical reports for national and international organizations and is a member of the editorial board for the International Journal for Equity in Health.
Recognized for her research efforts, she has received awards from the Fulbright and Ford Foundations, among others. Dr. Vilar is passionate about teaching and mentoring, with over ten years of experience in these fields. She has volunteered with boards and national chapters of organizations related to education for peace and sustainability, such as UWC and CISV.
